Name: SARAH KOLMAN
Hometown: Chicago, Ill.
Age: 21
Year in School: Senior

Major/Degree Program: English, with minors in theatre arts and psychology

Internship: Working in Fox Broadcasting Company’s Network Operations and Programming/Commercial Administration.

We trafficked all the promos, commercials, bumpers (transitions between programs and commercials), billboards, shows, and all the other elements that are essential in broadcasting the primetime shows and sports events. I filed and fetched a lot of papers, along with following the employees on their day-to-day tasks, input commercials as they arrived, put away tapes that were delivered, organized commercials for sports and prime, and more. There was no set job that I needed to do on a day-to-day basis, except show up and learn as much as I could.”

Location: Los Angeles, Calif.

Highlights: “My absolute favorite part of my internship was sitting in and watching as they prepared and recorded the live So You Think You Can Dance shows on Thursdays. There is so much preparation that goes into it, along with certain guidelines that they have to follow. I was able to hear

the stage manager saying what camera to go to or who to bring out next and also what was happening backstage. There are also a bunch of delays, one for the feed to the audience, but also one to bleep out swear words or take out anything visual that is not up to broadcast standards. It was so exciting and each show was different, and honestly it was probably the best thing that I did here.”

Career Goals: To work in the entertainment industry, either managing a show or production (theater, television, or film), or to write her own scripts or plays.
