Warm Welcome - President Mason greets the class of 2014 with a party at her place

The University of Iowa welcomed the largest first-year class in its history with a pair of revived traditions—an Aug. 23 Convocation on the Pentacrest, followed by a block party at the President’s Residence on Clinton Street.

Both events are part of the University’s push to help new students feel at home as soon as they set foot on campus. The Convocation offered a ceremonial kickoff that exhorted students to excel, stretch, engage, choose, and serve during their time at Iowa. The block party, on the other hand, was all about food, new friends, and fun.

More than 4,500 students make up the class of 2014—well beyond the enrollment growth target established more than a year ago. The class is also among the most diverse and most accomplished in University of Iowa history, with students from across the country and, increasingly, around the world.
