SPACE RESEARCH

On Aug. 24, NASA will launch two identical satellites to begin its Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission to study the extremes of space weather and help scientists improve space weather forecasts. The twin satellites will study the Van Allen radiation belts, discovered by UI physicist James A. Van Allen in 1958. More

Images created by the Cherished Portraits program at UI Children’s Hospital look like typical professional photos. These pictures, however, are anything but ordinary. The program provides portrait sessions for families experiencing stillbirth or newborn death, infants and children with life-threatening illnesses, children facing the end of their lives, or at the time of an unexpected death. Babies born to overweight mothers gain less weight and grow more slowly than those born to normal-weight mothers, according to a UI study. But they do catch up, meaning that pediatricians should refrain from boosting their nutrition, which could make matters worse. More

A study by a UI economist finds that many car race fans do, indeed, watch NASCAR races to see car wrecks, but more have been tuning in to see who actually wins the race since the circuit adopted its Chase for the Cup championship series in 2004. More

ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Sean Moeller discovered his love of music as a student in Iowa City, and he’s parlayed that into a career. His website, Daytrotter.com, went live in 2006 and has become a launching pad for some of the biggest bands in America. More

HONORED ALUMNUS

The late Philip G. Hubbard, UI vice president emeritus and professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, was recently honored posthumously with an induction into the Iowa African-American Hall of Fame. More
