Debra A. Schwinn, an anesthesiology faculty member at the University of Washington in Seattle, has been named the next dean of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Her appointment will be effective Nov. 1, pending approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. More

University of Iowa Health Alliance, which includes over 50 hospitals and more than 160 clinics in Iowa and contiguous areas, will focus on sharing expertise, support services, and information technology. MUSEUM OF ART

After a brief stay at a Des Moines art museum, Jackson Pollock’s seminal work Mural is headed to the West Coast for a facelift. In a collaboration between the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the UI Museum of Art, the painting will travel to the Getty this summer to undergo technical study and conservation treatment by research scientists at the Getty Conservation Institute and conservators at the J. Paul Getty Museum. More

UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS

Beginning in August, first-year/freshmen applicants to the University of Iowa will self-report their high school course work, test scores, grade-point average, and class rank when they apply for admission. The change will reduce paperwork and postage and allow applicants to get an admission decision within 48 hours. More

Since a UI doctoral student formed a writing group in 2010 for individuals using the services at the Shelter House, more than 50 people have participated—and some have made dramatic turnarounds. More
