BAT DEATHS

A research team based at Illinois State University, which included UI scientist David Meyerholz, used forensic pathology to determining the cause of bat deaths at wind farms. The study concluded that traumatic injury from collision with turning turbine blades is the most likely cause of death, a contradiction to a second, widely reported theory that the bats die from ruptured and bleeding lungs caused by low-pressure fields created by the turning blades. EPILEPSY FINDING

Since the 1930s, scientists have studied the prickle gene, noting that flies carrying mutated prickle genes exhibit physical malformations such as body bristles pointed in abnormal directions. However, until a Sunday morning two winters ago, no one had recognized that these flies were also epileptic. More

BONE HEALTH

A new clinical trial conducted by UI researchers shows that delivering high doses of “load,” or stress, to bone by activating the skeletal muscle with programmed electrical stimulation significantly slows the loss of bone density in patients with spinal cord injury.
