Paul Harding, a 2000 alumnus of and current visiting faculty member in the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, has won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his debut novel, Tinkers. The book, which was published by Bellevue Literary Press, is about a dying man reflecting on his life and his relationship with his father. More

ARTS CAMPUS

Replacing the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) must be a top priority so the entire permanent art collection can return to the UI campus, according to a report by the UIMA Envisioning Committee. The report also recommends that the new museum enhance the University's academic and research mission by making its collection and expertise accessible to faculty and students across the disciplines, as well as to Iowans. Meanwhile, a national search is under way for a museum director who will help plan and begin major fundraising for the new building. More

FINANCIAL EDUCATION

More and more surveys show that fewer and fewer Americans have the financial and economic knowledge to make wise money-management decisions, especially when it comes to funding their retirement. A new center in The University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business hopes to help fix that problem. The Iowa Center for Wealth Management provides an online resource for unbiased financial education, guidance, and advice as a free public service. More

FLOOD PREDICTION

Less than a year old, the Iowa Flood Center at The University of Iowa is making good progress toward its goal of improved flood monitoring and prediction capabilities in Iowa. More

CANCER RESEARCH

A multidisciplinary team of scientists at The University of Iowa has received a five-year, $3 million grant from the National Cancer Institute for research to improve clinical decision making for cancer patients through better use of medical imaging. More

NEW COACH

Fran McCaffery was officially introduced March 29 as The University of Iowa's 22nd head coach of men's basketball during a press conference at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. During his formal introduction, McCaffery spoke about his coaching philosophy, the style of play Hawkeye fans can expect to see, and how he builds relationships with players. McCaffery spent five seasons at Siena College, winning 112 times and taking the Saints to the NCAA tournament the past three years. The season before McCaffery arrived, Siena was 6-24. More

HONORS

John Pappajohn, who immigrated to Iowa from Greece as an infant and went on to become one of The University of Iowa's most accomplished alumni and one of Iowa's most influential entrepreneurs and philanthropists, will receive an honorary doctoral degree from the University. The Iowa Board of Regents unanimously approved the honorary degree March 23. Pappajohn will receive the degree May 16. More

HEART CARE

Current drugs used to treat heart failure and irregular heartbeat have side effects and limited results. New basic science findings from a University of Iowa study suggest a way that treatments could potentially be refined so that they work better and target only key heart-related mechanisms. More

RELATIONSHIPS

A University of Iowa study found that one-third of sexual relationships in the Chicago area lack exclusivity. Researchers are interested in the topic because concurrent partnerships speed up the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, says Anthony Paik, a sociologist in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and author of the study published in the latest issue of the journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health. More

TOP TEACHERS

Four University of Iowa faculty members have won the 2010 President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence in recognition of their years of outstanding teaching: Nancy Hauserman, professor of management and organizations, and Todd Houge, lecturer in finance, both from the Tippie College of Business; Gene Parkin, professor of civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering; and Norbert Pienta, professor of chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. University of Iowa sophomore catcher Liz Watkins was recently named co-Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts in Iowa's two-game sweep at Michigan State University. More

DANCE

University of Iowa Youth Ballet, a community outreach program of the UI Department of Dance, will offer three weeklong dance workshops for children and youth this summer. The workshops are also known as "intensives" because students practice up to six hours a day during the week, depending on their level of experience. More
