From West Africa to Hockey Arenas - UI students land summer internships despite tough economy

With the deep recession, high jobless, rate and other gloomy economic news weighing on the nation's collective soul, it's a wonder University of Iowa students were able to get out of bed in the mornings this summer, let alone find meaningful employment. But, despite the odds, many students found interesting and exciting internships across the country and the globe, from the hallowed

corridors of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to medical clinics in The Gambia.

Following are brief profiles of five Iowa students who, through hard work and diligence, earned the chance to explore careers that they hope to pursue after graduation.
